Supporting Language Learning: How Parents Can Help

Practical ways to support your child's language learning at home, beyond the classroom.

Creating Language Exposure

Language learning thrives with regular exposure. If your child is learning a language at school, exposure at home makes a huge difference.

You don't need to be fluent to support: watching films, listening to podcasts or music, reading books in the target language all help your child absorb patterns and vocabulary.

Supporting Bilingual Children

If your family speaks another language at home, maintain it! Bilingualism is a cognitive advantage, not a burden.

  • Designate a parent or time for the home language ("Mum speaks Mandarin with you")
  • Read books in both languages
  • Celebrate the home language—don't let school dominance push it out
  • Connect children with cultural communities or relatives

Conversation Practice

Simple conversations build language confidence. Even if you don't speak the language fluently, encourage your child to teach you or use translation apps together.

"Tell me about your day in French." "What's this word in Spanish?" These low-pressure conversations build fluency faster than worksheets.

Using Media Effectively

Quality language learning media:

  • Films and shows: watch with subtitles in the target language (not English)
  • Podcasts: Simple Stories, Slow French, similar platforms for many languages
  • YouTube channels: native speakers creating content for learners (often free)
  • Apps: Duolingo, Memrise, Busuu for vocabulary building

Keeping Motivation Alive

Celebrate progress, not perfection. Praise effort: "You're working hard on your pronunciation" not "You're so good at French."

Connect language learning to real experiences if possible: visiting a country, communicating with relatives, watching their favourite films in the language.
