Year 7-8 students are ready for sophisticated ensemble work and large collaborative productions. Ensemble performance teaches cooperation, communication, and the joy of creating art together.
Collaborative Arts Performance
Building Ensemble Skills
Develop as ensemble performers:
- Listening to others: Responding to ensemble members' performances
- Timing and coordination: Moving and speaking together with precision
- Spatial awareness: Awareness of other performers' positions and movement
- Unison and harmony: Performing together as one unit
- Trust and support: Creating safe, supportive ensemble environment
Interdisciplinary Arts Productions
Create productions combining multiple art forms:
- Musical theatre: Combining drama, music, dance, and design
- Concert performances: Large ensemble musical performances
- Devised theatre: Original productions created by the ensemble
- Dance theatre: Combining dance with dramatic elements and music
- Multimedia performances: Incorporating video, lighting, projections
Technical and Design Elements
Explore behind-the-scenes aspects of performance:
- Lighting: How lighting affects mood and visibility
- Sound and music: Technical aspects of amplification and recording
- Scenery and set design: Creating believable worlds on stage
- Costume and props: Visual elements supporting the performance
- Stage management: Coordinating all elements of a production
Large-Scale Production Project
Full-Scale Musical or Play: Students collaborate on a major production with multiple cast members, complex sets, music, and technical elements. This could be a musical, play, or original devised work.
Everyone Involved: Large productions engage students in many roles—performers, musicians, technical crew, costume/set designers, etc. Everyone contributes to the final product.
Performance Process: From initial concept through multiple rehearsals to final performances, students experience the full theatrical process.
Audience Connection and Community
Sharing Work: Perform for genuine audiences—parents, school community, other classes. Real audiences provide meaningful feedback and validate the work.
Pre-Show Preparation: Learn to work with audience (manage expectations, create excitement, respond to reactions).
Post-Show Reflection: Reflect on audience response and what the experience taught about performance and communication.
