Understanding Ecosystems

Ecosystems are communities of living things and their physical environment:

  • Biotic factors: Plants, animals, microorganisms
  • Abiotic factors: Sunlight, water, soil, temperature, atmosphere
  • Food chains: How energy flows through ecosystems
  • Biodiversity: Variety of living things in ecosystems

Study local and global ecosystems: forests, grasslands, deserts, wetlands, coral reefs, ocean systems.

Environmental Challenges

Year 5-6 students can begin to understand environmental issues:

  • Climate change: Rising temperatures, changing weather patterns
  • Habitat loss: Deforestation, urban development reducing animal habitats
  • Pollution: Air, water, and plastic pollution
  • Biodiversity loss: Species extinction and ecosystem degradation
  • Resource use: Sustainable vs. unsustainable resource management

Present information in age-appropriate ways that encourage problem-solving rather than despair.
