Year 5-6 students are developing understanding of how humans interact with environments and the importance of sustainability. This unit explores ecosystems, environmental challenges, and actions for a sustainable future.
Environmental Geography and Our Responsibility
Understanding Ecosystems
Ecosystems are communities of living things and their physical environment:
- Biotic factors: Plants, animals, microorganisms
- Abiotic factors: Sunlight, water, soil, temperature, atmosphere
- Food chains: How energy flows through ecosystems
- Biodiversity: Variety of living things in ecosystems
Study local and global ecosystems: forests, grasslands, deserts, wetlands, coral reefs, ocean systems.
Environmental Challenges
Year 5-6 students can begin to understand environmental issues:
- Climate change: Rising temperatures, changing weather patterns
- Habitat loss: Deforestation, urban development reducing animal habitats
- Pollution: Air, water, and plastic pollution
- Biodiversity loss: Species extinction and ecosystem degradation
- Resource use: Sustainable vs. unsustainable resource management
Present information in age-appropriate ways that encourage problem-solving rather than despair.
Sustainability and Personal Action
Empower students to contribute to sustainability:
- Reduce, reuse, recycle: Minimize waste and resource consumption
- Energy conservation: Reduce energy use at home and school
- Water conservation: Use water wisely
- Sustainable choices: Think about environmental impact of purchases
- Conservation efforts: Support wildlife and habitat protection
- Community action: Participate in environmental projects
Classroom and School Projects
School Sustainability Audit: Investigate water use, energy consumption, waste, and food practices. Identify areas for improvement and propose solutions.
Garden Project: Create a class or school garden. Learn about growing food, local ecosystems, and food sources.
Wildlife Habitat: Create habitats for local wildlife: butterfly gardens, bird feeders, frog ponds.
Waste Audit: Track and reduce classroom waste. Educate others about recycling and composting.
Environmental Investigation: Monitor water quality, air quality, or a local ecosystem over time.
Environmental Education Resources
Museum Victoria: Environmental Education
Resources about Australian ecosystems, wildlife, and environmental issues. Includes virtual exhibits and lesson materials.
