Using Formative Assessment to Guide Instruction

Practical formative assessment strategies that inform daily teaching decisions.

Understanding Formative Assessment

Formative assessment is ongoing monitoring of student learning during instruction—it informs teaching decisions. Summative assessment measures what students have learned at a point in time (tests, reports). Formative assessment guides responsive teaching; summative assessment documents achievement. Both matter, but formative assessment drives daily instruction.

Effective teaching relies on continuous formative feedback. What do students understand right now? What gaps exist? What confusion needs addressing? Formative data answers these questions.

Quick, Practical Assessment Strategies

Effective formative assessment doesn't require elaborate systems. Try: exit tickets (one-minute reflection on learning—answer a question, identify confusions), observation notes during group work (brief jottings on student understanding), thumbs up/sideways/down for self-assessment (students indicate confidence), think-pair-share observations (listen to student thinking during discussions), work sampling (reviewing student work in progress).

The goal is gathering real-time information about learning without excessive record-keeping. Quick, regular checks beat occasional deep assessments.

Acting on Assessment Information

Formative assessment only matters if you respond to findings. Exit tickets showing 60% of students confused about fractions means reteaching is needed—not moving ahead to division. Observation revealing a student struggling with partner work suggests small group instruction or different grouping. Real-time assessment requires real-time responsive teaching.

Share findings with students. "I noticed most of you are mixing up metaphor and simile. Let's spend tomorrow's lesson clarifying the difference with more examples." Students understanding the teaching responds to their needs builds engagement.

Building Student Self-Assessment Skills

Involve students in assessing their own learning. Share success criteria: "Good writing includes a clear introduction, details, and conclusion." Have students assess themselves against criteria. "Where am I strong? Where do I need to improve?" Self-assessment builds metacognition and ownership of learning.

Model self-assessment. Think aloud about your own work: "I was clear here, but this paragraph is confusing. I need to revise." Students learning to assess requires explicit modelling.

Sustainable Documentation

Keep assessment records sustainable. Rather than detailed notes on every student daily, develop systems matching your capacity. Sticky-note observations recorded in student folders, running records on targeted students, photo documentation of learning—find what's sustainable for you. Imperfect documentation used consistently beats ideal systems abandoned by October.

Use digital tools if helpful: quick Google Form exit tickets, photos dated and filed, or Google Classroom assessments. Technology can reduce administrative burden if it genuinely helps.
