Mapwork Skills for Young Geographers

Geography in Year 5-6 builds essential mapwork skills while exploring Australian landscapes, regions, and communities. Students learn to read maps, understand symbols and scale, and recognize how geography shapes human settlement and activity.

This unit develops spatial thinking and geographical literacy essential for understanding our world.

Mapwork Foundations

Build essential skills progressively:

  • Map symbols and legend: Teach students to interpret map symbols and create their own
  • Scale and distance: Understand scale bars and calculate distances on maps
  • Grid references: Use coordinates to locate places on maps
  • Compass directions: N, S, E, W and intermediate directions
  • Map types: Physical maps, political maps, thematic maps, satellite maps

Use large-scale maps of local areas first, then progress to state, national, and world maps.

Exploring Australian Regions

Develop understanding of Australia's diverse regions through comparative geography:

  • Northern Australia: Tropical climate, Indigenous cultures, unique wildlife
  • Southern Australia: Temperate climate, urban centers, agricultural regions
  • Western Australia: Vast landscapes, mining economy, coastal areas
  • Eastern Australia: Diverse landscapes from tropical to temperate, major population centers
  • Central Australia: Arid landscapes, Indigenous communities, desert ecology

Have students compare climate, vegetation, population, industries, and human impact across regions.

Climate Zones and Landscapes

Connect climate patterns to landscape characteristics and human activities:

  • Tropical and subtropical zones: Rainforests, seasonal rainfall, tropical coasts
  • Temperate zones: Woodlands, grasslands, temperate forests
  • Arid and semi-arid zones: Deserts, sparse vegetation, water scarcity

Explore how climate affects agriculture, settlement patterns, water resources, and ecology. Use examples from different Australian regions to make connections concrete.
