Understanding Our Local Community

Year 3-4 students can explore and understand their local community through geography. This unit develops knowledge of community places, services, and people while building sense of belonging and local identity.

Identify key places and landmarks in the local community:

  • School and playgrounds: Where children spend time
  • Shops and services: Groceries, libraries, post office
  • Community facilities: Parks, community centers, pools
  • Workplaces: Where people work
  • Natural features: Parks, rivers, beaches, native vegetation
  • Historical landmarks: Significant local places

People Who Help in Our Community

Explore workers and helpers in the community:

  • Teachers and school helpers: Educating students
  • Health workers: Doctors, nurses, dentists
  • Emergency services: Police, firefighters, paramedics
  • Shop workers and tradespeople: Providing goods and services
  • Community volunteers: Helping without payment

Invite community helpers to visit the classroom or arrange visits to local workplaces when possible.

Mapping the Community

Develop mapmaking and spatial thinking skills:

  • Classroom map: Create a map of the classroom with furniture and areas labeled
  • School map: Map the school grounds, buildings, and key areas
  • Street map: Create a map of streets near school, identifying key places
  • Neighborhood map: Map the broader neighborhood showing places and landmarks

Local Exploration and Walking Tours

Neighborhood Walk: Take students on a walk through the local community. Point out landmarks, services, natural features. Discuss how places are organized. Safety first—plan routes carefully and follow all safety protocols.

Community Sketch: After walking, have students sketch or draw what they observed. Label key places and features.

Interview Project: Ask students to interview family members about the community. What places have changed? What do they remember? What's new?

Learn about the Indigenous heritage of the local area:

  • What are the Indigenous names for local places?
  • What's the Indigenous history of the area?
  • Are there Indigenous cultural sites or places of significance?
  • How can we respect and acknowledge Indigenous heritage?

Contact local Indigenous communities or cultural centers for respectful, accurate information.
