Understanding Different Australian State School Systems

Navigate the differences between NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, and other states.

The Big Picture

Australia has no single national curriculum. Each state and territory sets its own standards, has its own exams, and manages its own schools.

This is confusing if you move states, but it means each system is designed for its context.

All state systems deliver quality education. Differences are in structure, not quality.

NSW (New South Wales)

Primary: Kindergarten (age 5) through Year 6 (age 12). Broad curriculum with arts, languages, technology.

Secondary: Year 7-10 (compulsory), then Years 11-12 (HSC = Higher School Certificate). NAPLAN in Year 3, 5, 7, 9.

HSC: Exam-heavy final years. Subjects in tiers—scalable subjects (weighted towards tertiary study), standard subjects. Your marks across all subjects count toward an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) for uni entry.

Strengths: Flexible subject choices, well-regarded HSC. Challenges: heavy exam focus by end of secondary.

VIC (Victoria)

Primary: Prep (age 5) through Year 6 (age 12).

Secondary: Year 7-10, then Year 11-12 (VCE = Victorian Certificate of Education). NAPLAN in Year 3, 5, 7, 9.

VCE: Less exam-heavy than HSC. Unit-based (4 units per subject, each worth 25%). Assessments spread across the year (SACs = school-assessed coursework, plus exams). ATAR for uni based on scaled study score.

Strengths: Less reliant on final exams, continuous assessment. Challenges: Year 11-12 workload can be intense.

QLD (Queensland)

Primary: Prep (age 4-5) through Year 6 (age 11-12). Note: Prep starts a year earlier than some states.

Secondary: Year 7-10, then Year 11-12 (QCCE = Queensland Certificate of Education, formerly OP system). NAPLAN in Year 3, 5, 7, 9.

QCCE: Similar to VCE—unit-based, continuous assessment. Four units per subject. QCE score and ATAR for uni entry.

Strengths: Balanced assessment model. Challenges: Earlier start to school (Prep at age 4).

WA (Western Australia)

Primary: Pre-primary (age 4-5) through Year 6 (age 11-12).

Secondary: Year 7-10, then Year 11-12 (WACE = Western Australian Certificate of Education). No NAPLAN—WA opted out. Assessment through PAT (Progressive Achievement Tests).

WACE: Unit-based. Mix of exams and coursework. ATAR for uni entry.

Strengths: Alternative to NAPLAN. Flexibility. Challenges: Different assessment framework can be confusing if moving states.

SA, Tasmania, NT, ACT

South Australia (SACE): Year 11-12 certificate. Two-year subjects. Stage 1 (Year 11) and Stage 2 (Year 12). Assessment mix of exams and school work.

Tasmania (TCE): Tasmania Curriculum and Certificate. Similar continuous assessment model.

Northern Territory (NTCET): NT Certificate. Mix of subjects and portfolios.

ACT (ACT Year 12 Certificate): Unit-based, similar to VCE/QCCE.

All states feed students toward ATAR for uni entry. All have similar student support systems.

Moving Between States

If you relocate: expect an adjustment period. Curriculums differ, pace differs, assessment methods differ.

The school's transition team will help. Talk to the new school about your child's background and any subject-specific gaps.

Most students adjust within a term. Gaps fill in.

Don't panic about losing ground. Australian schools have significant overlap despite different systems.
