The Year 7 Shift

Year 7 is where students move from concrete maths to abstract thinking. Fractions, algebra, and indices can feel like a foreign language. Your role isn't to be the maths teacher—it's to create a space where your child can ask questions without shame.

Many parents worry they'll get the answer wrong. That's actually fine. Struggling together teaches your child resilience more than instant answers ever could.

Key Concepts to Know

Algebra: It's just maths with letters. Reassure your child this is normal across every school in Australia.

Fractions: Teach with pizza or chocolate. If there are visual links, learning sticks better.

Indices (Powers): Explain as 'repeated multiplication'—23 = 2 × 2 × 2. Simple as that.

  • Ask your child to teach you the concept—if they can explain it, they understand it
  • Don't jump to calculator mode instantly
  • Download a free graphing app (like Desmos) to visualise equations together

Helping with Homework Without Solving It

Your child needs to struggle a little. That's where learning happens. Here's the script:

"I see you're stuck. Let's look at what you DO know already."

Ask guiding questions: "What operation might work here?" or "Have you seen a similar problem?" This keeps their brain in the driving seat.

If they're frustrated after 15 minutes on one problem, it's time to pause. One frustrating evening doesn't build skills—it builds maths anxiety.

When to Escalate

If your child says "I'm dumb at maths" after Year 7 Week 2, they're not struggling with maths—they're struggling with the transition. Talk to the teacher.

  • Persistent anxiety: Hands shaking, stomach aches before maths class
  • Avoidance: Refusing homework entirely, not even attempting problems
  • Huge gaps: Can't do basic multiplication or division from primary school

These signal a need for targeted support, not blame.
